I was recently going through my Facebook friends to see how many I had lost with my many recent posts involving current events. One of the “friends” lost was someone I was friends with in high school. She and I had a complicated relationship but were friends back then nonetheless. Am I surprised she deleted me? Not at all. We have incredibly different political beliefs. However, equal rights should not be considered radical or political. So, why is that?
I don’t know that I will ever understand why, but there are people who hate others for no reason other than they are different. I know that blind loyalty to political parties and being surrounded by very vocal bigoted opinions has something to do with that. I have vowed to myself that I will never pledge my loyalty to a political party because that removes my ability to change my opinions when new information comes out.
A timeless belief I will always have is that everyone deserves equal rights regardless of who they are or where they come from. Nobody deserves to be discriminated against because of their race, religion, sexuality, gender identity, or any other part of one’s identity. This belief transcends both time and place. Regardless of where I am in life, I will always believe in and stand up for equal rights.
